Lebanese Community Members Offer Helping Hand To Those In Need
By: Iris Salem
They say that time is a precious commodity. But, I contend that changing someone’s life is priceless and time that is well spent.
It took less than 240 minutes to offer compassion, a warm meal and bring joy to more than 70 residents at a local Los Angeles shelter.
On Nov. 21, the members of the House of Lebanon Young Professionals (HOL-YP), in collaboration with the Lebanese Rotaract and Lebanese Collegiate Network (LCN) had the opportunity to walk in the shoes of those less fortunate at the PATH (People Assisting the Homeless) facility in Hollywood.
Being able to offer support to those in need remains one of the greatest holiday memories for those who attended the event.
Giorgio Sassine, a member of HOL-YP, was not only touched by the experience, but also humbled.
“We all need to help each other. We all need to understand what it could be like to be in someone else's shoes,” said Sassine.
Rotaract Founders, Ferris Wehbe and his wife, Debbie generously donated food, beverages and dessert to feed the occupants at the facility.
The day’s events culminated with a raffle, where PATH residents were given the opportunity to win a variety of prizes – including soap sets and bags.
From cutting slices of pumpkin pie to assembling sandwiches and washing dishes, the day was a tribute not only to the priceless gifts that can be given when those dedicate a few hours of their time, but to the fact that even the smallest gestures reap the biggest rewards.
“I left the building aware of how great it is, and can be, to help another in need,” said Sassine.
Lebanese Find Inspiration Hiking
By: Michael Alti
A day after significant rainfall poured on West Los Angeles , the House of Lebanon Young Professionals led a nature hike through Will Rogers State Historic Park in Pacific Palisades on September 23. The hike allowed HOL members to meet and network in an informal setting, enjoy some peace and relaxation in the local mountains, and get a decent workout. HOL President Kanan Hamzeh and its new Executive Director Karen Srour greeted a dozen outdoor enthusiasts as they prepared for their journey.
Guided by HOLYP Committee Member Michael Alti, his mom Gracy, and their canine companion Rocky, the group hiked to Inspiration Point for panoramic views of the Santa Monica Mountains and the LA Basin. The sky was incredibly clear thanks to the prior day's rainfall. After the climb, the group shared a lunch atop Inspiration Point, discussed HOL activities and their careers, and enjoyed some moments of bonding. A small group, including Rocky the poodle and Sebastian the Maltese, then continued on for an ascent up to "Chicken Ridge" for even more amazing views.
The House of Lebanon promises additional outdoor activities in the near future for the Lebanese community. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Mike Alti at 310-613-8482.
Young Lebanese Break Bread Together

On July 13, 2007, the House of Lebanon Young Professionals Executive Committee hosted one of the most memorable summer events at Byblos Restaurant in Westwood. The soirée drew over 50 young Lebanese. The evening also had some lucky attendees that walked away with various prizes that included a plasma television. The benefit of attending events such as these, allows young Lebanese living in America to feel a sense of closeness to both their community and their country of heritage. HOL continues to serve its mission by connecting Lebanese youth and adults.
